Emergency Medicine Fellowship

The proposed curriculum is designed to expose fellows to seven different core aspects of International Emergency Medicine while obtaining the MPH degree and carrying out various academic requirements. The fellow will be expected to work clinically at the Louisiana State University (LSU New Orleans) hospital, where they will function at the level of an attending physician.
Clinical Component:
The fellow will work the equivalent of 7 twelve hour shifts each month at the LSU New Orleans hospital. These shifts will be averaged over the course of an academic year to allow for flexibility in travel. The shifts will be divided between the different sections of the Emergency Department. Individual shift length will vary between eight to twelve hours.
Academic Component:
The fellow will be expected to:
1. Host or attend monthly journal clubs when in country
2. Give one International EM (IEM) and one general EM lecture each academic year
3. Attend one IEM conference each academic year
4. Mentor residents and medical students who are interested in IEM as well as assist with their IEM projects
5. Produce and submit at least one work of publishable quality over the course of the fellowship.
MPH Component :
This aspect of the fellowship is determined by Tulane's School of Public Health. The caveat for fellows is that both the public health analysis (PHA) and the culminating experience must fall under the purview of IEM. The actual projects must be approved by the fellow's mentor in the school of public health and by the fellowship director in order to qualify for fellowship completion.
Equivalent Experiences:
A recent article delineated seven separate areas (EM systems, humanitarian relief, disaster medicine, travel and field medicine, public health, program administration and academic skills) of IEM which have been called "domains" for the purposes of this fellowship.  Fellows are expected to carry out experiences in each of the seven domains prior to graduation.
By the nature of the fellowship, the academic skills and public health domain will be satisfied, leaving the five additional domains to be explored by the fellow. Individual fellows will have divergent interests and so the types of experiences they will have in each domain will reflect this. 
Each experience is termed an "equivalent experience" for the purposes of this fellowship.
