Meet Our Residents
2014 - 2015

Simms,Eric

Eric Simms, MD, Chief Resident
HO-V

"The thing that makes our program a rare one indeed is the commitment to mentorship. Virtually anything that can be imagined can be actualized at our program as long as a resident is willing to put the elbow grease to do it, because the support to make it happen is there among the faculty. I have been afforded international surgical experience unheard of at almost any other program, and been able to procure grant money for an invention idea, because I have had the support from faculty to do so. There is no such thing as stonewalling at our program. As far as one can imagine is as far as they can get at our program."

"It's easy to say that I'm getting great training in one of the most amazing cities in the U.S., but what really made the difference for me here is the residents.  Tulane's Surgery Department has put together a group of people who care not only about their patients, but about each other and the program we are all a part of."

"I went to Tulane for med school so I already knew how strong the program was. Interns are given an immense amount of opportunity to operate, which really sets us ahead of our peers at other programs. "From day one I was expected to be a contributing part of the treatment team in the hospital, operating room, and socially. Tulane became a family very quickly." "I am so happy to be in this residency. The residents all function as a team no matter what hospital we're at and every Friday at conference is like a reunion. Of course there are days that are tough, but the path to excellence isn't always easy and takes hard work. The staff recognize this and are amazing teachers while also providing us with appropriate autonomy as we progress.

My career course will be different from others in the residency because I'm also a member of the US Navy and will be a Navy Surgeon and probably an attending the first year out of residency. On interviews I always made it a point to asked if the Chief residents felt like they had good case load and operative experience. The answer at most places is yes, but Tulane goes above and beyond. The difference is that we get to operate with private and academic surgeons which will prepare us better for operating independently once residency is complete.

Lastly, I love getting to experience the great city of New Orleans and the unique culture here."

"I picked Tulane for residency because this is a group of people who have the same high expectations for themselves and each other that I have for myself. This group strives for excellence in everything we do."

"I was immediately impressed by the level of responsibility interns are given, particularly the early introduction to bedside and basic OR procedures. We are held strictly to that responsibility, which imparts not only accountability and professionalism but a sense of ownership to our operative as well as academic training."
