In 1736, just eighteen years after the settling of New Orleans, a French sailor founded Charity Hospital to care for the indigent. Named for the Daughters of Charity nuns who ran it for a century, Charity is the second oldest continually operated public hospital in the United States. From 1833 until destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in August 2005, Charity was located on Tulane Avenue. Tulane Medical School grew up around Charity and relocated next door in 1929. Generations of physicians chose Tulane residency programs because of Charity Hospital. Though the iconic structure closed following hurricane Katrina, the Spirit of Charity lives on at University Hospital. Plans to build a new, modern facility are being developed. Internationally-renowned Dr. Norman McSwain, Tulane Professor of Surgery, directs the Level-1 trauma center at University Hospital. Yearly, University sees more than 1100 surgical inpatient admissions. Surgery residents are on trauma service here during postgraduate years one, two and four.
