Hematopathology — Image #25 — Auer Rods

Auer Rods

Atypical linear condensations of cytoplasmic granules, Auer rods are seen in myeloid blasts and indicate a modicum of differentiation. Never seen in normal myeloid precursors, or in acute lymphoblastic leukemia, Auer rods are virtually diagnostic of AML. A myeloperoxidase stain can highlight Auer rods, as seen here.
