Auto-antibodies are directed against platelet antigens, such as GPIb or the GPIIb-IIIa complex, and shorten the lifespan of the platelet. A healthy marrow responds by increaseing the number of megakaryocytes. This marrow shows an increased--about 2-3x what you would normally see at this magnification.
