Monocytes

This is the circulating cell related to the tissue macrophage. It comprises up to 10% of the circulating leukocytes. The cell is rather large (15-16u) with abundant grey-blue cytoplasm which may contain small pink granules and vacuoles.

The nucleus is folded, often kidney bean-shaped and has open lacey chromatin strands which can impart a "raked" appearance. They show clumping of chromatin as well.
