Hematopathology — Image #02 — Polymorphonuclear Cells

PMNs

Mature, segmented neutrophils account for approximately 50-75% of the circulating leukocytes. Usually they have 3-4 nuclear segments joined by a thin isthmus of chromatin. The cytoplasm is filled with fine "salmon-colored" granules - called the "secondary granules." When reactive, eg. in infection, neutrophils show primary granules a.k.a. "toxic granulation", Döhle bodies, and cytoplasmic vacuolization.
