The 36th Annual Guy Caldwell Lectureship in Pediatric Orthopaedics was held on August 17-18, 2012.
The Caldwell Visiting Professorship is presented annually in honor of Dr. Guy Caldwell. Dr. Caldwell was born in Mississippi in 1891 and passed away in 1981. Dr. Caldwell came to Tulane in 1938 and served as Professor and Chairman of the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery. With other Chairmen at Tulane, he helped institute the formation of the Ochsner Clinic which opened in 1942. He also served as its first Chief of Orthopaedics at Tulane and at Ochsner.
Our 2012 Visiting Professor was Dr. Tony Herring. Dr. Herring has served as chief of staff at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children since 1978. Dr. Herring has served as chairman of the Pediatric Committee of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and president of the Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America. He is an associate editor for the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Dr. Herring is also a producer of the films A Fight to the Finish: Stories of Polio and DeBakey, the latter of which was screened at Saturday's lecture on Saturday, August 18.
DeBakey explores the life and work of world-renowned cardiac surgeon, Michael DeBakey. Dr. DeBakey was born in Lake Charles, LA and is an alumnus of the Tulane University School of Medicine. He also completed his internship and residency at Charity Hospital. The screening was well attended by faculty, residents, and School of Medicine alumni.
Special thanks to Cynthia Hayes in the Alumni office for her help in coordinating the event.
