Miles FriedlanderMiles H. Friedlander, MD, FACS
Cornea, Refractive Surgery

Dr. Friedlander is a professor of ophthalmology. His major fields of interest are cataract, refractive, and corneal surgery. He performed his first case of refractive surgery at the EENT hospital in December 1977, making him the fourth ophthalmologist in the United States and the first ophthalmologist in the South to perform modern refractive surgery. He, along with Dr. Jose Barraquer of Bogota, Columbia, and Dr. Richard Troutman of New York City, established the International Society of Refractive Keratoplasty, a scientific organization devoted solely to the study and advancement of refractive surgery. Today it boasts over 1,500 members and is the largest association in the world devoted solely to refractive surgery.

Dr. Friedlander began teaching courses in the Barraquer technique in the United States in 1978, after having taught over 1000 ophthalmologists various types of refractive surgery, including radial keratotomy and laser ablation. He has worked with instrument companies to develop and test various refractive surgical instruments and techniques. He is currently concentrating on instructing ophthalmologists, both nationally and internationally, in LASIK (laser assisted in-situ keratomileusis), a modern version of the original Barraquer keratomileusis technique. He is past president of the International Society of Refractive Surgery and of the New Orleans Academy of Ophthalmology. He was chosen as the named Barraquer speaker at the American Academy of Ophthalmology meeting in 1990. He has been awarded both the Honor Award and Senior Honor Award by the American Academy of Ophthalmology for his teaching efforts. He is a recipient of the Storz Instrument Innovators Award and of the Founders Award of the International Society of Refractive Surgery.

Dr. Friedlander has contributed chapters in seven ophthalmic textbooks and has authored over forty-two articles appearing in the current ophthalmic refractive literature. He has served on the editorial board of the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and is currently on the editorial board of the Journal of Refractive Surgery. He reviews scientific articles for Ophthalmology, Archives of Ophthalmology, The CLAO Journal, and British Journal of Ophthalmology.
