The Tulane Obstetrics & Gynecology Education Fund

The Tulane Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency Education Fund, was initially established following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. The resident physicians play an influential role in the delivery of healthcare in any system in which they work, and an exponential role in improving that healthcare by educating medical students.

In the days following Katrina, not one of Tulane’s residents left their post. Despite the absence of water, electricity and sewage, the residents maintained their professionalism and fulfilled their duty to perpetuate care in the hospitals in which they worked. One resident even evacuated with her patient several days after the hurricane hit and assisted in her cesarean delivery once evacuated. In the month that followed residents took care of New Orleans patients, their own homes and temporarily moved to Houston, Texas. By the end of the first month, the residency rebuilt itself and resumed training in the two cities that predominately housed its patients: Houston, Texas and Alexandria, LA. During the year that followed residents gradually were returned to New Orleans as the population they cared for returned. Living in New Orleans was not easy. Yet the residents were anxious to return to staff the clinics and assist the women who needed them so much.

The Resident Fund was established to:

1. Empowering resident physicians to provide directly observed instruction in the art of bedside medicine for medical students.
2. Provide resources necessary to teach residents how to teach Obstetrics & Gynecology.
3. Provide resources to support travel for one to two physician experts from around the world to provide instruction in patient care for Ob-Gyn residents and Tulane students.
4. Provide resources for an award of excellence for resident physicians who have demonstrated exceptional skill in Obstetrics & Gynecology.
5. Teach the virtue of social justice in the practice of medicine by empowering residents to teach students cultural competency: how to care for a diverse array of people in their practice of medicine.
