Tulane Infectious Diseases faculty provide consultations on inpatients at Tulane University's private teaching hospital, Tulane Medical Center (TMC); Medical Center of Louisiana at New Orleans; and the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System (these patients are admitted to TMC as inpatients).
Our faculty have ambulatory ID clinics at TMC, MCLNO and SLVHCS:
TMC: Drs. McLellan (at the Lakeside campus), Asad, Mushatt, and Schieffelin
MCLNO: ID fellows and Drs. Asad and Nnedu
SLVHCS: Dr. Dejace
We also have several specialized clinics:
TMC Solid Organ Transplant ID: Dr. Asad
Travel Clinic: Dr. McLellan
Wetmore TB Clinic: Dr. Nnedu
TUCHC (Community HIV clinic): Dr. Dery
Our faculty are all board-certified in Infectious Diseases and take care of patients with general infectious diseases as well as HIV infection. Certain faculty specialize in travel and tropical medicine, tuberculosis and solid organ transplant infections. All of our faculty participate in teaching medical students, residents and fellows, and many are involved in clinical research ranging from HIV clinical trials to tropical diseases.
Faculty and fellows rotate every 2-4 weeks between the various inpatient facilities. Patients requiring inpatient care are admitted to a primary care service (e.g. General Internal Medicine, Surgery, etc.), and the ID team is called in to see those patients in need of ID consultation. In most cases, patients are seen by an infectious diseases fellow (internal medicine doctor receiving advanced training in the subspecialty of infectious diseases) or resident, sometimes a medical student, and always by a Tulane faculty member.
