Mission Statement

The mission of the Section of Clinical Immunology, Allergy & Rheumatology in the Department of Medicine, Tulane University Medical Center, includes the following:

To provide the most excellent clinical care for our patients in our Allergy/Immunology and Rheumatology clinics.

To educate and train physicians in the field of Allergy and Immunology. Our mission is to educate, through our Fellowship Program, the most outstanding physicians equipped to evaluate, diagnose and manage patients with the highest degree of scientific and clinical excellence.

Our fellows, as well as their patients, will benefit from their learning about the many facets of the practice of medicine, including sensitivity and compassion for the human beings they see in their practice, awareness of cultural differences, as well as the ethical practice of medicine.

They will be exposed to many related topics, basic science and clinical, through our various seminars and conferences. Our fellows participate in ongoing research and must choose a research project to complete, present and publish for completion of their training. Our fellows, through their training, develop a lifelong interest and desire to continue learning and to share their knowledge.

To provide histocompatibility testing support for the Tulane Multi-Organ Transplant Programs, including kidney, liver, heart, and pancreas, as well as, allogeneic and autologous bone marrow transplantation, through our Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics Laboratory under the direction of Dr. Karen Sullivan.

To expose Fellows to laboratory research through the laboratory of Dr. Samuel B. Lehrer, the Clinical Immunology Research Laboratory, as well as their research work with other investigators.

Our mission is to serve our patients through our clinical endeavors and to train the most excellent Allergists and Immunologists who will go on to practice our specialty, do research, and teach the next generation of outstanding physicians in the field.
