Gastroenterology Fellowship Program
The Training Program in Gastroenterology at Tulane is a three year ACGME approved subspecialty program leading to competence in the independent practice of general gastroenterology. The curriculum follows guidelines for GI training set down by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Trainees will rotate among three main sites, all of which serve patients from New Orleans, south Louisiana and beyond:
1. Tulane University Hospital and Clinic, a private facility which is our flagship hospital. Present activities at Tulane Hospital include inpatient GI consult service, inpatient Abdominal (liver)Transplant service, and outpatient clinics and endoscopy. This is a tertiary care referral center for patients from Louisiana, the eastern Gulf coast and Latin America.
2. The Medical Center of Louisiana in New Orleans (MCLNO), a state run facility serving largely indigent patients. Present activities at MCLNO include inpatient services at the LSU Interim Hospital and adjacent Charity Clinic, pending completion of the new MCLNO hospital. This is also a tertiary referral center for indigent patients from throughout southeast Louisiana.
3. The Veterans Administration Medical Center in New Orleans (VAMC). Present activities at the VA include inpatient services at Tulane University Hospital and Clinic, outpatient clinics and outpatient procedures at the VA Ambulatory Procedures Unit (APU), pending completion of the new VA Medical Center hospital. VAMC serves veterans from throughout southeastern Louisiana.
Faculty include individuals with expertise in general gastroenterology, hepatology (especially liver transplant), advanced therapeutic endoscopy, inflammatory bowel disease, neurogastroenterology /motility, and colorectal cancer genetics. Fellows will have an opportunity for exposure to all of these disciplines. They will also have the opportunity to be involved with clinical and basic research.
