Biography

Dr. Mauvais-Jarvis is a physician scientist who received his medical degree from the University of Paris V School of Medicine in Paris, France and holds a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Paris XII. Following completion of his residency in medicine and a clinical fellowship in endocrinology in teaching hospitals of Paris in 1996, he joined the laboratory of Dr. Ronald Kahn at the Joslin Diabetes Center and Harvard Medical School to study the mechanisms of insulin resistance as a post-doctoral fellow. In 1999, he was recruited as Junior Faculty at the Lariboisiere & St Louis Medical Center and University of Paris VII in Paris, France where he specialized in diabetes care in indigent minority populations and characterized an emerging form of type 2 diabetes, ketosis-prone diabetes. In 2003, Dr. Mauvais-Jarvis was recruited as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and served as attending physician in Endocrinology at Ben Taub General Hospital.  Between 2006 and 2013 he was Associate Professor in the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Molecular Medicine in the Department of Medicine and Research Director of the Comprehensive Center on Obesity at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. In 2013, he was recruited at Tulane University School of Medicine where he holds the Price-Goldsmith Professorship and is Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medicine, Section of Endocrinology and Metabolism. He is an elected member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation.

Research Interests

Dr. Mauvais-Jarvis has been the Director of a Diabetes Research Laboratory since 2003 and has authored over 90 publications and book chapters dealing with novel mechanisms and/or therapeutic perspectives for diabetes and obesity and the role estrogen and androgen in the development/prevention of these diseases. He is internationally recognized for the discovery of estrogen receptors activation in protecting insulin-producing pancreatic beta-cells in type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Dr. Mauvais-Jarvis is the principal investigator of federal research grants from the National Institutes of Health and has received national and international awards from organizations including the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the American Diabetes Association, the American Heart Association, the March of Dimes and Birth Defects Foundation and the French Diabetes Association.
