INSTRUCTIONS: Your responses on this student profile will be used this upcoming academic year, during the process of preceptor and site assignments for your Family Medicine Clerkship. Though this may seem a long way off, placement is complex and requires advance planning. This profile is about yourself, your current career interests, and any special placement requests relevant to the Clerkship. A copy of page one of the profile may be made available to your preceptor to help him/her get to know about you before you start there.
Our intent is to give each of you the best possible educational experience during your Family Medicine Clerkship. We intend to work with your preferences and requests wherever feasible. There are many outstanding preceptors and sites available across the region where you can have a fabulous experience. Please remember that preceptors are volunteers, and that it is essential that we work within their schedules and availability. Hence, most preceptors are not available at all blocks. In addition, placements at New Orleans sites are typically very limited during most blocks because there are relatively few sites available, and because of competition for many with LSU students. Metro sites must therefore be reserved for students with documented need to remain in the area. (Pets, research, extracurricular activities and special hobbies are not considered extenuating circumstances for assignment in the New Orleans metropolitan area.)
If you have a request for placement or types/locations of practices of greatest interests, please explain your request on page 2, with supporting information where applicable. We strongly encourage students to spend time reviewing preceptor/site options with the Clerkship Coordinator. We cannot promise that we can honor all requests, but giving us 2 - 3 preferences significantly improves the chances of receiving one.
You may not, under any circumstances, find your own preceptor nor contact a preceptor to ask if he/she will accept you. This may jeopardize not only your placement, but also the relationship between Tulane and the preceptor. We always welcome suggestions or 'leads' on preceptors, but the School MUST make the contacts and arrange placements.
