Welcome from the Program Director

Welcome to Tulane's Preventive Medicine Residency Program website! As you explore the website, I hope that you get an appreciation for the depth and breadth of the program. Established in the early 1960's, Tulane's program has evolved over the years to provide a rich educational curriculum that capitalizes on a wide variety of local and regional resources to train residents for careers in public health practice, academics, and administration.

As you are planning the next phase of your education, consider that in the current era of health care, physicians are expected to have the knowledge and skills to address not only individual patient issues, but also community-wide, national and global health concerns. A recent report of the Institute of Medicine indicated an urgent need for a workforce that is equipped to respond to public health threats ranging from natural disasters, bioterrorism and emerging infections to chronic health threats such as obesity.¹

A public health physician is defined as a physician whose training, practice and world view are based in large part on a population focus rather than individual practice, that is, on assuring the availability of essential public health services to a population using skills such as leadership, management, and education as well as clinical interventions.  Tulane's Preventive Medicine Residency Program responds to the urgent need for a highly trained public health workforce by providing resident physicians the means for acquisition and application of the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of preventive medicine and public health in real-life settings.

Career paths of our recent graduates range from academics including clinical research to public health practice in local, regional, national, and international agencies; other graduates have entered the private sector for clinical practice or health care administration.

I invite you to explore the possibilities of Tulane's Preventive Medicine Residency Program. The program offers an excellent avenue to maximize your educational experiences that will prepare you for leadership positions in the future! As you browse through the website, please feel free to contact us.
