Family Medicine

Family medicine is the medical specialty which provides continuing, comprehensive health care for the individual and family. It is a specialty in breadth that integrates the biological, clinical and behavioral sciences. The scope of family medicine encompasses all ages, both sexes, each organ system and every disease entity.

Family medicine doctors provide the majority of "primary care" for society. A primary care physician is a generalist physician who provides definitive care to the undifferentiated patient at the point of first contact and takes continuing responsibility for providing the patient's care. Such a physician must be specifically trained to provide primary care services.

Family medicine physicians provide the following services:

  • Annual physicals
  • Preventive care
  • Well-woman/pap smear exams
  • Well-child care/school physicals
  • Newborn vaccines
  • Chronic disease management, i.e. diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis
  • Acute care, i.e. coughs, colds, skin infections, joint injuries
  • General psychiatric care, i.e. depression, anxiety, insomnia
