Antibodies are protein scaffolds whose structures can be modified to interact with virtually any molecule. Basic research in our laboratory studies focuses upon antibody-ligand interactions and how specific residues, both in the binding loops and framework regions of the protein, contribute to antibody affinity and stability. Our translational research focuses upon the isolation and characterization of monoclonal and recombinant antibodies that bind to metal ions, and the subsequent incorporation of these antibodies into low-cost sensors that can be used to provide real-time, on-site analysis of metal ion contamination in the environment.
A second project in the laboratory, an interdisciplinary effort that involves clinicians and engineers, focuses upon the design, development and testing of new polymer formulations that can deliver pharmaceuticals over a prolonged time period.
