The DeBakey Scholars Program

Expectations and Benchmarks

It is anticipated that all students will devote one or two half-days per week in the1st and 2nd years with concentrated time on the project in the summer between the 1st and 2nd years and/or the early blocks in the 4th year.

All students in the program will do a capstone poster presentation at the Tulane University Health Sciences Research Days in the spring of their 4th year.

First Year:

  1. Explore research interests with Program Director and potential mentors.
  2. Students will utilize a database of mentors and their research interests, Departmental Web Sites, and other faculty mentor information resources.
  3. Meet potential mentors and discuss their areas of research interests.
  4. Begin formulation of a question and develop project goals.
  5. Review relevant scholarly literature and complete the literature review section of your comprehensive project plan form.
  6. Integrate ideas and methods from the curriculum and your experiences.
  7. Select a mentor as early as possible.
  8. When you select a specific project and mentor, complete the Comprehensive Project Plan Form to be reviewed by the mentor and Program Director.
  9. If you plan to do intensive work on your project in the summer between the 1st and 2nd year, review the specific expectations for the second year.
  10. OEHS laboratory safety training.
  11. If working with animals, animal care and handling training

Second Year:

  1. Meet with mentor regularly and communicate with the Program Director to discuss your progress (each semester or more often as needed).
  2. Present work-in-progress in regular thematic area meetings or other forums.
  3. Review and utilize relevant literature.
  4. Define approach, methods and scholarly plan.
  5. Update and submit Comprehensive Plan Form by end of March.
  6. Mentor reviews and signs Comprehensive Plan Form by end of March.

Third Year:

  1. Utilize non-curriculum time or intersessions and other times for investigation or refinement of project.
  2. Communicate regularly with mentor regarding progress on project.
  3. Communicate with the Program Director by the end of the fall semester.
  4. Update and submit Comprehensive Plan Form by end of January.
  5. Mentor reviews and signs Comprehensive Plan Form by end of January.
  6. Students who did not complete intensive course work in the 1st and 2nd years must schedule two four week research blocks early in the 4th year to work on their project.

Fourth Year:

  1. Work on project between July and January.
  2. Communicate regularly with mentor regarding progress on project.
  3. Communicate with the Program Director by the end of the fall semester.
  4. Submit first draft of paper or final updated Comprehensive Plan Form by December with mentor review and signature.
  5. Complete scholarly product by the end of January of the 4th year.
  6. Submit a final 10-25 page MSA paper by February, and deliver a capstone poster presentation at the Tulane University Health Sciences Research Days in the spring of the 4th year.
