An elective is offered in clinical Pediatric Hematology/Oncology to second year students. The course offering is available to 1 student per session. The sessions are available Monday - Thursday mornings.
The student is expected to participate for a semester in the elective, which will involve about 1/2 day per week following patients in the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology clinic. The students will be mentored by the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology attending physician. Initially, students will see and examine patients in the presence of the attending. As the student becomes more experienced and comfortable, he/she will take histories, do examinations, formulate the assessments and plans and make presentations to the attending physician before the physician sees the patient. Because the majority of patients have chronic illnesses, the student will be able to follow many patients over most of the year. A variety of illnesses are seen such as leukemia, solid tumors, sickle cell disease, anemias and coagulation disorders. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the pathophysiology of these disorders. In addition, research projects will be available for interested students.

Students will meet weekly for two hours with a faculty member or fellow in the Section of Pediatric Infectious Diseases. Meetings will consist of discussions of a specific topic or case history which illustrates specific aspects of Pediatric Infectious Diseases. These might include meningitis, pneumonia, tropical infections, antimicrobial therapy, and specific pathogens such as HIV and tuberculosis. Emphasis will be on the pathogenesis of infectious diseases and the clinical correlation of basic sciences and clinical practice. There will be assigned readings. During some of the sessions, the students may go to the ward or clinic to see patients with specific conditions or to the laboratory to review microbiological findings.
