Orthopaedic Summer Elective

Every participant will be assigned an orthopaedic resident who acts as a mentor. A maximum 8 students can be enrolled for each 2-week block. Participants will be given hands on learning how to reduce fractures and dislocations; make splints and casts; and incise, debride, and suture wounds. They will receive biweekly lectures on the following topics: musculoskeletal chief complaints and their workup, a primer to fractures and dislocations, being a team physician, and musculoskeletal imaging. Students will take a musculoskeletal competency test at the end of their elective in order to solidify their knowledge. This test will be compiled by the resident mentors. No book will be required for purchase—all material tested will be included in information provided to students in electronic form. The students completing the elective will be given a certificate stating their participation in the musculoskeletal elective.
