The clerkship is designed to introduce the student to the AP subspecialty of Cytopathology. The student will learn the value of the clinical application of cytopathology to include: diagnosis, differential diagnosis, ancillary tests and therapy. The student will learn to understand the clinical significance of morphologic changes in healthy and diseased cells from cytologic examination of gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens, including superficial and deep fine needle aspirations. Students will participate in the fine needle aspiration service as well as daily cytology sign-out. The student will work closely with the cytology fellow, resident and staff cytopathologist. The rotation runs for 2 weeks from 8:00a.m. to 5:00 p.m. There is no evening, weekend or on-call responsibilities.
Provide an understanding of Cytopathology with its values and limitations in clinical patient management.
The student will participate in all activities of the Cytology team. This experience will cover a full range of medical and surgical diseases encountered at Tulane University Health Sciences Center and the Medical Center of Louisiana - New Orleans with an emphasis on neoplasia, cancer screening and diagnosis.

At the end of each rotation, the Director will discuss goals and objectives with the student and review the evaluations from faculty, fellows and residents on rotation.How Is This Course Evaluated By Students?: At the end of each week, the student will evaluate the course using a student evaluation form.

The Surgical Pathology clerkship introduces the T-3/T-4 medical student to the field of surgical pathology, a subspecialty of anatomic pathology. During this rotation, the student will participate in the surgical pathology rotation at either TMC or Charity Hospital and will experience the spectrum of responsibilities of a surgical pathologist including interactions with clinicians. This includes but is not limited to gross prosections, microscopic evaluation, frozen section evaluations, ancillary techniques, and histologic diagnosis with differential diagnostic considerations. The student will work closely with the pathology residents and faculty on service. The clerkship runs for two weeks, Monday through Friday and begins at approximately 8:00 am and ends at approximately 5:00 pm each weekday. There are no evening, on-call or weekend responsibilities. The student will attend the general tumor board on Wednesday at 1:00 pm and the soft-tissue/bone tumor board on Friday at 1:00 pm . The student will be graded on a Pass-Fail basis.
Provide the student an understanding of the central role of the surgical pathologist in patient management based on evaluations of tissue removed at surgery or during diagnostic procedures.
The student will participate in all activities with the surgical pathology residents and faculty at either Tulane Medical Center or Charity Hospital . The above experience will cover all aspects of surgical pathology including both medical and surgical diseases.
How Is This Course Evaluated By The Course Director? The course is evaluated by input from both faculty members' participation and student's evaluation forms. Faculty members participating in the clerkship will be informed of all evaluation forms used (faculty and student) and faculty responsibilities in the clerkship.How Is This Course Evaluated By Students?: At the end of the rotation, the student will evaluate the course using a student evaluation form.
Prerequisite: Mechanisms of Diseases - Pathology and Pathophysiology course or equivalent. It is preferred but not required to have one of the following previously: General Surgery Clerkship, Medicine Clerkship, OB-Gyn Clerkship, Pediatric Clerkship or Family Practice Clerkship.Quota: 1 Student

Method of Evaluation Student Performance: Student performance is determined by the surgical pathology faculty member(s) on service with the student. It is based on attendance and participation in daily activities with faculty, and general knowledge and application of that knowledge to surgical pathology exhibited by the student to the faculty member. This is documented by evaluation forms filled-out by faculty members and submitted to the Director of the Clerkship. At the end of the rotation, the Director or a faculty member designee will discuss the student's performance with the student. The clerkship secretary and Director are to be notified within 24 hours of lack of attendance. Any problems the student experiences should be reported as soon as possible to the Director and clerkship secretary.

By familiarizing the students with hospital autopsies, to include clinical history, gross and microscopic findings, the autopsy clerkship will enhance students' ability to establish clinicopathologic correlations. Emphasis will be placed on the student's development and use of observational and deductive skills, and on self-directed independent study.
After the clerkship, students will be able to:
- formulate a differential diagnosis based on a clinical history
- observe and describe gross findings in organs
- differentiate normal and abnormal gross findings at autopsy
- formulate a final diagnosis based on autopsy
- correlate clinical manifestations of the patient with morphologic findings at autopsy
- recognize the microscopic characteristics of frequent diseases
- describe the clinical and pathologic characteristics of common diseases
- respect patient confidentiality
- outline the procedure of obtaining family consent for autopsy
- define criteria for "coroner's cases"
Autopsy of recently deceased patients is performed at Tulane and at Charity Hospitals - and occasionally at the Coroner's. Dissection is done by the pathology resident, under the supervision of pathology faculty and with the help of a technician. Microscopic sections are reviewed in each case. Neuropathology, gross and micro, is performed with the neuropathologist. Report and diagnoses are generated. Students will have the opportunity to collaborate at each step, to achieve the objectives outlined above. Emphasis will not be placed on acquisition of technical skills by the student.

Prerequisite: Students must have taken anatomy, histology, pathology. Pathology faculty and residents will be made aware of the objectives of the clerkship and of their roles.
Quota: Limited to 1 student per 2-week rotation, anytime during the calendar year
Method of Evaluation Student Performance: After each autopsy, faculty and resident will evaluate the student using the enclosed form and forward it to the director. The director will meet with the student on the first day to outline objectives, at mid-time to evaluate and define need for remediation, and at the end for summative evaluation. The director will generate a written final report, to include a fail-pass grade.

Over the course of the two-week clerkship, students will develop the skills needed to interpret and formulate a differential diagnosis of the more commonly occurring disorders seen in peripheral blood, bone marrow, and lymph node biopsies. Every day, the student will encounter about 20 new cases, involving CBC's, blood smears, bone marrow biopsies, flow cytometry, molecular diagnostics, coagulation studies, hemoglobin electrophoresis and protein electrophoresis. The student will gather pertinent clinical history on assigned cases, and preview slides with the hematopathology fellow. At each afternoon's sign-out with the faculty and fellow, the student will have opportunity to present their brief case histories and summarize the laboratory data at hand. morphologic evaluation and case interpretation will take place during sign-out. The student will also have an opportunity to observe specimen work-up in the flow cytometry lab )and time permitting, molecular diagnostics). Every evening, the student will be given sample cases to solve that reflect the kinds of cases seen at sign-out. These exercises will be reviewed with the course director every morning.

How Is This Course Evaluated By Students?: Students will be asked for feedback periodically during the daily meeting with course director and will be asked to complete a written evaluation at the end of the rotation.
