Clinical Introduction to Hospice and Palliative Care

Course Description
Course Objectives
To obtain first hand by working directly with the hospice team and hospice patients and families the following experiences in/knowledge of:
- The goals and methods of hospice care and palliative medicine.
- The provisions of the Medicare hospice benefit.
- What constitutes an appropriate referral to hospice care?
- The interdisciplinary team method.
- A rudimentary understanding of pain and symptom pharmacology.
- A small bibliography of references in the care of terminally ill persons and their loved ones/family.
Method of Assessment: Discussion among participating team members concerning the students' performance and attitude . We will use group's consensus for grade.
Dates available: All dates.
Number of students: 2 every 2 week period
Prerequisite: Should have at least started 3rd year
