Several members of the One Man Shoot Committee recently attended a Round Table Luncheon on Prostate Cancer, hosted by Drs. Prescott Deininger, Brown Chair in Oncology and director of the Tulane Cancer Center, and Oliver Sartor, Laborde Professor of Cancer Research. The committee learned more about how Dr. Sartor utilizes the research funds they raise through their annual sporting clays fundraiser, and they met and spoke with members of Dr. Sartor's clinical and basic research team. The committee members also presented Dr. Sartor with a check for $192,000, representing the proceeds from their August 18 fundraising event.
The Second Annual One Man Shoot Sporting Clays Fundraiser took place on Saturday, August 18, at Riverside Sporting Clays in Denham Springs, Louisiana. Over 80 four-man teams participated in the day's events, and though the rain interrupted the competition, it didn't dampen the spirits or the generosity of those in attendance, who dug deep to raise important funds for Oliver Sartor, M.D.'s, Prostate Cancer Research Fund here at Tulane.
The inaugural One Man Shoot, which took place in September 2011, raised an incredible $237,000. This year's event raised another $192,000. Every penny has been invested by Dr. Sartor into research for a cure.
"By organizing fundraising events around activities that men enjoy, we have the potential to support research while increasing awareness about the importance of early detection, and that's how we'll make a difference, one man at a time," said Michael Boykin, head of the committee that organizes the event in honor of Michael's brother, Connie Mack Boykin, a prostate cancer survivor and Dr. Sartor's patient.
The group hopes others follow their lead and organize similar events not only across the state, but across the country as well. "We want this event to grow to a national scale and raise as much awareness for prostate cancer as the pink ribbon did for breast cancer," said committee member Randy Hays. "If we don't stand up and do something, our sons, grandsons and great-grandsons will have to face the same dreadful disease."
Dr. Sartor, the C.E. and Bernadine Laborde Professor of Cancer Research at Tulane Cancer Center and the only medical oncologist specializing in prostate cancer in the state of Louisiana, is working hard to prevent that from happening. "The knowledge we've gained from the laboratory is being translated to the clinic faster now than ever before, but we need to do more," says Sartor. "The funds raised from this event will be focused on new therapies and a new understanding of the disease. I thank the members of the One Man Shoot committee and those who participated in the event for all they do to create solutions, and thousands of prostate cancer patients thank them too."
