The Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most commonly used measure of obesity. BMI is calculated using a person’s height and weight; adults with a BMI of 25 – 29.9 are considered to be overweight, and adults with a BMI of 30 or greater are considered to be obese.
For example, a person who is 5 foot, 9 inches tall (69 inches) and weighs 182 pounds has a BMI of 27, which is considered to be overweight. A person who is 5 foot, 9 inches tall and weighs 210 pounds will have a BMI of 31, which is considered to be obese.
