International & DO Visiting Students

Thank you for your interest in training at Tulane University School of Medicine, however at this time Tulane University School of Medicine is only offering electives to foreign medical school that already have existing contracts. All other should apply through the AAMC VSAS system. If our school has an affiliation you may proceed and fill out an application and information as instructed below. Please note that even with an affiliation agreement only clerkships in internal medicine, surgery, psychiatry and neurology are available.

Below is a brief statement of the requirements and some general information. For additional information, please see our Clinical Clerkships page which lists all the clinical clerkships available to visiting students. NOTE: ONLY ELECTIVES are offered to visiting students. No Core rotations are available to visiting students.

Please read the information carefully and return all required forms and documents as soon as possible to complete the application process:

• An application form for your entire stay. Complete another application ONLY if you want to return for a different time period.
• A letter from your Dean or his authorized representative stating that you are a senior student in good standing and that you have approval to study at Tulane.
• Verification of malpractice and personal health insurance coverage.
• Cash or check in the amount of $300.00 representing a non-refundable application processing fee required. Note that tuition is also charged.
• Immunization certification by your dean or his authorized representative that you have had a negative response to TB Screening and that you are immune, or have been immunized, to Rubella and Rubeola.

Abbreviated Statement of Policies

• The visiting student must be a duly enrolled as a student in a medical (allopathic or osteopathic) school. There are NO exceptions.
• A visiting student may pursue an academic program at Tulane Medical School for no less than two weeks and no more than six weeks unless special permission is obtained from the Director of Student Affairs.
• Clerkships completed by visiting students do not carry credit within Tulane Medical School; therefore, visiting students are not eligible for the M.D. degree from Tulane University.
• Tuition is always charged per time that you are registered as a student.
• The visiting student must have written approval from his/her dean or from the dean's authorized representative.
• The visiting student must be in good standing in his own medical school.
• Visiting students are routinely accepted only in our senior clerkships and only from the senior year of his medical school. A student in the junior year may arrange for a clerkship to be taken in his senior year.
• The visiting student is not to be supported nor compensated by Tulane Medical School funds.
• Malpractice insurance is required; coverage cannot be provided for visiting students by Tulane Medical School, and there are no individual policies available in Louisiana at this time.
• The visiting student must provide his/her own health insurance. Tulane's Student Health Office will provide initial ambulatory medical care for new illnesses or injuries but is not obligated to provide continuous care unless coverage by the student's personal health insurance policy permits it.
• The visiting student must make his/her own provisions for room and board and parking. He may rent a room and lease parking space from the university if there are openings.

Other policies concerning intramural aspects of clerkships for visiting students are not set forth in this abbreviated statement of policy.

OTHER INFORMATION

Clerkships must be taken in accordance with Tulane's schedule. These clerkships are usually of one month duration.

Applications from visiting students are processed after Tulane junior medical students have signed up for their Senior clerkships, which usually begin between the end of April and mid-May.

There is a $300 non-refundable fee for processing the application of students and tuition charge of $500 per month.  All fees must be paid in full prior to you starting your rotations.

Visiting students are responsible for their housing and parking expenses and for making their own arrangements.
