Needlestick Information

No matter where you are in the United States while engaged in a Tulane-sanctioned educational experience, if you are injured or exposed to a bloodborne pathogen by a "sharps" injury or blood-body fluid splash, call us!

For any injury or exposure, Monday through Friday, 8am - 4pm, call Student Health Services at 504-988-6929. All other times, page the on-call physician at 504-538-7277.


Injuries and Pathogen Exposure Guidelines

Immediate care for Bloodborne Exposures:

  • Call 911 for serious injuries/exposures
  • Flush eyes or mucous membranes with water or saline for at least 5 minutes for body fluid exposures
  • Wash skin with soap, Betadine® or Hibiclens® for at least 5 minutes for "sharps" injuries
  • From anywhere in the United States, call the Student Health Center on-call physician for further instructions.
