Doctorate in Social Work

The DSW Program in Social Work at Tulane University trains students for excellence in advanced clinical and community practice.

The program develops scholars who create and disseminate knowledge on social work with diverse populations. Included are those populations most vulnerable to social injustice, discrimination, and poverty – conditions that deprive people of access to economic, social, and psychological resources.

Program Faculty

DSW courses will be taught by program faculty from the School of Social Work.

Course assignments will be finalized by Summer 2014. In the meantime, applicants are encouraged to explore the social work faculty directory and communicate directly with professors conducting research and operating in their area(s) of interest.

Advanced Clinical Experience

DSW Graduates will be able to expand, integrate, and evaluate the existing professional knowledge base for effective social work. To accomplish this mission, the program is committed to an experiential approach that incorporates apprenticeship, mentoring, active learning, and immersion in a community of scholars.

The Advanced Clinical Practice DSW program will develop leaders in clinical practice and teaching who:

  • Apply innovative and critical thinking to pressing social, economic and environmental problems, especially in urban areas

  • Advance knowledge through research relevant to social work practice.

  • Collaborate with practitioners in an array of related disciplines.

  • Conduct action research in partnership with community organizations and group.

  • Communicate evidence-based social work knowledge through teaching and publication.

Employment Opportunities

With their unique blend of clinical experience and extensive training in clinical practice, DSW program graduates will be well suited for a variety of advanced professional positions, including management of social service programs and social work instruction at the undergraduate and masters level.

DSW graduates will also have access to a rich network of professional contacts through  fellow students and the School of Social Work's extensive community partnerships.
