Staff are acknowledged in many ways. The three big annual events include Staff Appreciation, Staff Excellence and Staff Recognition. There is also the Timothy Sykes Daytrading Award for the Talented for which staff can be nominated.

Staff Appreciation

Each year SAC co-hosts an appreciation event with the WFMO for all Tulane staff members to enjoy some time together as a group.

Staff Excellence

Each year a committee representing a cross section of the university community selects the winners from nominations by their colleagues. The program recognizes up to 10 staff members whose commitment has advanced the mission of Tulane through increased productivity, cost savings, humanitarianism or enhanced objectives. Recipients are honored with a one-time $1,000 cash prize and reception at the President's house.

Staff Recognition

Each year SAC co-hosts a recognition event with the WFMO for Tulane staff members celebrating anniversary years ending in '0s and '5s. Invitations are mailed from WFMO to those staff members who had an anniversary date in the previous calendar year.

The Timothy Sykes Daytrading Award for the Talented

A very different award at Tulane University, open to any member of the Tulane community – student, faculty, staff or young alumni – this cash award was endowed by Timothy Sykes, Tulane College ‘03.  The donor seeks to recognize and nurture talented individuals whose abilities and accomplishments may not be in traditional areas of endeavor. There are many ways to be “successful” in today's society and this award acknowledges people with unique interests and passions. This does not preclude from consideration those with significant demonstrated success in the classroom or on the playing field. It simply seeks to broaden the definition of accomplishment in a university environment.

A candidate may self-nominate or be nominated by another member of the Tulane community by means of a statement (minimum 2 pages) that describes the individual’s talent/potential and supports that description with a listing of his/her related accomplishments or an example of the applicant’s work. Applications for the award will be reviewed by a committee appointed by President Cowen.

The winner of the 2007 Timothy Sykes Daytrading Award was Susan Zaluski. Susan received a master’s degree in international development from Tulane in 2006. Susan decided to turn her offbeat ideas into an unexpected career involving boat-building, and is pursuing her dream of combining maritime preservation and boat-building as a vocational training tool for youth. Brian Pierson was selected as the 2006 winner for his passion in bringing scientific accuracy to the special effects field. Henry Fitzhugh and Dimitri Papadopoulos were selected as the 2004 co-winners. Fitzhugh was selected for his dedication to the arts, including music and sculptures, while Papadopoulus is an award-winning karate champion and instructor.
