Volume 20, Issue SE-1
The TUHSC Police Department provides a constant police presence on the Downtown Health Sciences Campus, but in the past incidents have increased during the summer time. Increased officer staffing and patrols have resulted in increased officer presence while providing a means to improve response times to requests for service and responses to reported and witnessed illegal activity.
The increased patrols did not deter one recent incident, but did contribute to the apprehension and arrest of the assault subject. A pedestrian was assaulted while walking to her vehicle at the end of the work day. She stopped a bike patrol officer and reported that she had just been assaulted by a subject that the officer observed running toward the housing project two blocks away. The officer radio announced the incident and gave chase. Three other on-duty officers immediately collapsed on the area, the assault subject was apprehended and arrested, and the toy air pistol used in the assault was recovered.
As you may know, opportunity is the major cause of crime. While we do not have enough officers for every floor of every building or for every campus corner, we do have the resources to maintain our aggressive patrol schedules and for timely responses to incidents. To be most effective, the department is subsequently dependent upon Faculty, Students, Staff and Visitors to both report incidents as-soon-as-possible after occurrence, and to reduce the opportunity for crime.
For street crimes - please use the safety escort service (particularly during hours of darkness), travel in numbers when possible, and practice the street smart and other tips contained in our brochures. For property crimes - please secure portable items of value at all times while on campus, and never leave anything that may be perceived as being valuable in plain sight in the passenger compartment of vehicles.
Please also call our emergency number 988-5555 (55555 on any campus telephone) to report campus security, medical and life safety incidents; and to report any suspicious activity or persons that you may observe on campus.
Crime Prevention and Safety Brochures
Don't forget that Crime Prevention and Safety Brochures are available in the 1430 Building lobby, Deming Dormitory lobby, Tidewater Building lobby, and the Murphy Building lobby.
These brochures offer you safety tips for jogging, bicycling, and just everyday life. We also have campus maps, and shuttle schedules available at both locations.
Remember to always report a crime or suspicious person as soon as you can safely do so at Extension 55555 or 85531.
STREET SMART TIPS:
When criminals on the street seek out potential victims, strong consideration is given to appearance. The criminals first determine whether the person is alone , which is the reason we emphasize the need to travel with others. If alone, you don't want to be in an isolated or dark area that you are not familiar with.
The individual's personal appearance comes next. Is the person aware of his or her surroundings, or does he or she appear confused, non-alert or even intoxicated? When walking, it is important that you know what is happening around you , and are going in a purposeful direction. If you see something that looks suspicious, turn around and go the other way. Trust your instincts!
BICYCLE PARKING TIPS!
TUHSC Police recommends that you secure your bicycles in the area provided by parking services. These areas include Tidewater 1 st floor bike room and the Medical School Garage bike room. Both of these areas can be accessed by contacting Tulane Parking Services located on the 8 th floor of the Tidewater Building .
