Dr. Maureen Lichtveld, MD, MPH, Freeport McMoRan Chair of Environmental Policy at the Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, has been honored as one of the Women of the Year in the annual New Orleans CityBusiness listing. She was fêted along with her fellow honorees at a gala dinner in November.

The publication highlighted Dr. Lichtveld for her work in developing a master’s program in disaster management at the Tulane. Dr. Lichtveld was named chair of the Department of Global Environmental Health Sciences just three weeks before Katrina, which underscored the need for such a degree at Tulane.

“The city of New Orleans’ resilience after Katrina mimics my resilience to continue to provide high-quality public health professionals to help areas, not only in our region, but across the nation and the world deal with disasters,” Dr. Lichtveld says in the accompanying CityBusiness article.

The article also points out how 50 students have graduated from the program since its inception and 100% of them have found work in the field.

Her success in securing grants for environmental health projects following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill was also highlighted.

This is the second nod for Dr. Lichtveld in the Women of the Year listing. She was also honored as one of the Women of the Year in 2007.
