A new global representative body was launched at the recent World Health Summit in Berlin. According to an announcement, the World Federation of Academic Institutions for Global Health will give an academic voice to influence policies on health and global governance mechanisms, promote methodological development and research, and share good practices in capacity building and on educational innovations.

Pierre Buekens, dean of the Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, represented the Consortium of Universities for Global Health at the launch of the new federation, which will be hosted as an independent organization at the University of Ghana’s School of Public Health.

Buekens, who is on a one-year sabbatical from Tulane, has been a staunch advocate for greater cooperation on global health issues. He said that the new federation will help to globalize global health by building bridges between regional academic global health organizations.
