Pierre Buekens reappointed as dean of School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine
Effective July 1, 2013, Dr. Pierre Buekens (the W.H. Watkins Professor of Epidemiology and Professor of Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology) has accepted reappointment for a third five-year term as dean of the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine (SPHTM).
Pierre began his tenure as Dean in 2003. He led SPHTM through the harsh challenges of Hurricane Katrina and, under his inspired leadership, the school has thrived. Over the past decade, SPHTM has dramatically expanded its portfolio of externally funded research, emerged as one of the top-ranked schools of public health in the nation, and developed impressive and popular programs of instruction and professional training, including (most recently) a trend-setting undergraduate major in public health.
A gifted investigator in his own right (in a variety of fields including perinatal epidemiology), Pierre was previously professor and Chair of the Department of Maternal and Child Health and associate dean for Global Health in the School of Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Pierre has also served as a former vice president of the School of Public Health at the Free University of Brussels, and he has been a consultant for the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), and other international organizations.
Pierre has also served as President of the Association of Teachers of Maternal and Child Health (ATMCH) and of the Society for Pediatric and Perinatal Epidemiologic Research (SPER). Pierre holds MD, MPH, and PhD degrees from the Free University of Brussels. In 2010, in recognition of a vastly distinguished career, Pierre was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Medical Sciences by the University of Suriname.
Please join the university in warmly congratulating Pierre Buekens on the occasion of his reappointment as the dean of Tulane's School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine.
Dr. LuAnn E. White, Professor of Global Environmental Health Sciences, will serve as interim dean of the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine (SPHTM), effective July 1, 2013. LuAnn assumes this role for the 2013-2014 academic year as Dr. Pierre Buekens, recently reappointed as SPHTM Dean, takes a previously scheduled research leave. The university wishes LuAnn White every success as she assumes significant leadership responsibility on behalf of our School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine.
