Curriculum Vitae

Research Interests:

Erik R. Svendsen, PhD, MS joined Tulane University in the summer of 2011 as an Associate Professor in the Department of Global Environmental Health Sciences. His primary research interests relate to environmental and occupational lung disease. Dr. Svendsen is an environmental and disaster epidemiologist working with populations which have been or are continuing to be uniquely exposed to hazards within their environment. He started his career focused on research of allergic illness, asthma, and environmental exposure to various air pollutants and bioaerosols. Although he is still engaged in those areas of research including current SBIR funded collaborations, his recent focus has been more on how the lungs recover and age following environmental injury, either from air pollution, radiation, or irritant gas exposures. His longitudinal cohort study of a population exposed to chlorine gas is supported by an R01 from the NIEHS, and a second smaller R01 lead by a nursing colleague is funded by the NLM to look at the efficacy of triage tools in such pulmonary disaster events. Dr. Svendsen is, also, collaborating with researchers in the Ukraine to follow a cohort of children who have been exposed to radiation through their diet since the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear reactor incident. This radiation work has described the long-term pulmonary effects of such exposures, including recent expansions into assessing the mechanisms which might describe the functional changes which he has been observing. Both the chlorine and the radiation cohorts have a key research interest in the longitudinal assessment of lung function, e.g. lung-aging and lung growth.
