Bio:

Keelia O’Malley, MPH, is a part-time PhD student in the Department of Global Community Health and Behavioral Sciences (GCHB). She is a graduate of Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine (TUSPHTM) where she received her Master in Public Health in Community Health Sciences and Nutrition. Her research interests are focused around policy and large-scale programmatic interventions addressing the social and physical determinants of dietary behavior and their impact on obesity and other chronic diseases. She works full-time as the Assistant Director of the Prevention Research Center (PRC) within the GCHB department. In this position Keelia supervises PRC staff, coordinates programs and relationships with community advisory board members and partner organizations, and assists the director in identifying and implementing PRC activities within all of the key elements of the center. Prior to her current position, Keelia was the Program Manager for the PRC's core research project for four years. In that position she managed multiple projects examining changes to the food environment across the city of New Orleans, within specific neighborhoods of New Orleans, and among families and children residing in different New Orleans neighborhoods. This included a study examining changes in food store inventory based on modifications to The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) package in October 2009, a city-wide study examining the effects of new food stores in New Orleans, and an in depth study focused on examining the effects of a new food store opening within a low-income neighborhood with documented food access issues. Prior to joining the Tulane PRC, Keelia worked on a number of obesity prevention programs including nutrition education at worksites through the ACTION! Program, and nutrition and anthropometric assessments of obese patients and development and implementation of specialized health education materials using a family-based approach through the University of South Alabama Pediatric Healthy Life Center. Keelia is the recipient of numerous honors including the Excellence in Nutrition Award, Dean’s Scholastic Award and membership in the Delta Omega Public Health Honorary Society.
