GEHS 7500 - Air Sampling and Analysis, 3 credits

Principles and techniques for evaluating exposure to airborne contaminants are presented in lectures, and practiced in two-hour laboratory sessions per week. Topics covered include air flow measurement, generation of controlled test atmospheres, total and respirable dust sampling, determination of particle size distribution, optical and electron microscopy,sampling of gases and vapors, and chemicals.                 Prerequisite: Bios 6030 Introductory Biostatistics

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:


1.  Define the common terms pertaining to chemical analysis, such as precision, accuracy, sensitivity, limit of detection, etc.

2.  Calibrate and utilize air flow metering devices and sampling pumps.

3.  Prepare and utilize controlled test atmospheres of gases and particulates.

4.  Utilize gaseous pollutant collection devices and explain the principles of their collection mechanisms

5.  Utilize particulate collection devices, with and without size separation, and explain the principles of their collection mechanisms.

6.  Describe the principles of the major analytical procedures utilized for airborne contaminants such as spectrophotometry, gas chromatography, optical microscopy, etc. and recognize the limitations and capabilities of each analytical procedure.

7.  Discuss the fundamental basis of atmospheric dispersion models and utilize and interpret the results from an advanced computerized dispersion model.

8.  Design a sampling strategy for evaluation of airborne contaminants including selection of appropriate sampling and analytical procedures, determination of required number of samples and their distribution, and interpretation of the data.
