Public Health Combined Degree Programs - BSPH/MPH or BSPH/MSPH or BSPH/MHA

Students in the BSPH program have the opportunity to pursue a professional master’s degree in public health in combination with their undergraduate degree.  High achieving BSPH students may pursue the Master of Public Health (MPH), the Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) or the Master of Health Administration (MHA) degrees in conjunction with their undergraduate degree.   These are professional degrees that prepare graduates to pursue careers in public health practice.

* The admission requirements for the MSPH in Industrial Hygiene include 60 or more credits in mathematics, engineering, science, and/or technology, with at least 15 at the upper (junior, senior) level.

The MPH and MSPH degrees require 45 graduate credits plus a practicum and a culminating experience.  The MHA degree requires 60 graduate credits and an internship.  In the combined degree program, students may take up to 12 credits of graduate courses taken while an undergraduate that is applied to both the BSPH and the MPH or MSPH or MHA degree.  The required 45 graduate credits include: 12 credits obtained while an undergraduate and an additional 33 graduate credits; degree requirements also include a practicum and culminating experience.

Students must complete all BSPH requirements and graduate from the BSPH program before moving onto enrollment in the MPH (MSPH OR MHA) program. SPHTM has rolling admissions into the graduate programs, so students who complete the BSPH graduation requirements in the fall of their senior year, may proceed onto the MPH or MSPH in the spring semester. MHA only accepts in the fall.

Graduate Courses that may be applied to the MPH in the Combined Degree:

In their senior year, BSPH students may enroll in the SPHTM graduate core courses.  These courses are applied to both the BSPH and the MPH or MSPH degrees. The 12 credits may be selected from the following graduate core courses:

  • BIOS   6030 – Introductory Biostatistics (3)
  • EPID   6030 – Epidemiological Methods (3)
  • GCHB 6030 – Social and Behavioral Aspects of Public Health (3)
  • GEHS 6030 – Survey of Environmental Health (3)
  • GHSD 6030 – Principles of Health systems Administration (3)
  • TRMD 6010 – Biological Basis of Disease (3)

Time for Completion of Combined Degree:  The MPH portion of the combined degree may be completed in approximately 1½ years after graduation from the undergraduate BSPH.  The MPH and MSPH typically takes 2 to 2½ years to complete. The combined degree provides a time saving of approximately 1 semester.   Those not formally accepted into the combined degree cannot apply course work taken as an undergraduate to a graduate degree.  BSPH graduates cannot come back and enter the combined degree.

When to apply:  Students must apply to the combined degree program in the second semester of their junior year.  This will allow them to be accepted into the program and begin graduate course work by their first semester of their senior year and take graduate courses. SPHTM has rolling admissions so students may begin the combined degree as soon as they reach senior status.  Students should plan to take the GRE in time for the results to be reported in the semester in which they apply to the combined degree program.  Application deadlines are:

  •  March 15 – Enter the combined degree program the following Fall semester
  • September 15 – Enter the combined degree program the following Spring Semester.

Eligibility:

  • 1.    Applicants must be enrolled in the Tulane BSPH program (public health majors).
  • 2.    Grade Point Average (GPA)  at least 3.0
  • 3.    Score in the upper percentiles of the GRE exam
