November 29, 2012

Dear friends,

It's hard to believe we are nearing the end of the semester. The holidays are a busy time for everyone and unfortunately they can present opportunities for those looking to steal the property of others. This is reason enough for us all to double up on our personal safety efforts.

We have seen an uptick in bicycle thefts on campus and in the surrounding areas uptown and downtown. Always secure your bike with a solid core u-bolt lock and secure it to an object. It's not enough to simply lock the tires. We have reports of people picking up unsecured bikes and simply walking off with them. Be sure and check out the helpful tips on our bicycle safety page. We will be instituting a program in January that will aggressively target bike thieves using innovative technology. More on that next semester.

As always, the residence halls will close for the holiday break. Be sure and secure any valuables you might be leaving in your dorm room, such as flat screen TVs and microwaves. Take all jewelry, laptops and ipads with you. We will patrol campus and the residence halls during the break but need everyone to do their part to keep campus safe.

I wish you and your families a safe and peaceful holiday.

Sincerely,
Supt. Jon Barnwell
