April 23, 2013

Dear friends,

I am happy to introduce yet another product aimed at improving the security of our campus. The Tulane University Police Department, in concert with the Office of Emergency Management and Technology Services, is now offering an emergency notification system that will deliver an alert to any computer, laptop or tablet connected to the Tulane network, either wirelessly or directly, to forward notifications about urgent threats on our campuses.

This system allows us to reach those Tulanians who may be in class, a lab, the library or not in a position to receive emergency text messages. We now have the capacity to reach entire classrooms during an emergency by displaying a message via the smart board system. The screen disappears once the user clicks on an acknowledge button.

It is a system we hope we never have to use but I urge you to download the program onto your computer. It is a small file and takes only a couple of minutes to install. If you have further questions, please refer to the FAQ on the download page or email us directly at wavepatrol@tulane.edu

Join us for the First Annual Tulane University Risk and Safety Summit

I want to extend an invitation to all Tulane faculty, staff and students to a special event on risk and safety at Tulane. The "Strike Out Risks and Score with Safety" Summit will be held in the LBC on the uptown campus April 24, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be a general session on "What employees should know about responding in an active shooter event" at 2 p.m. with additional breakout sessions throughout the day on recognizing and reporting concerning behavior in students/co-workers, field trip guidelines, preventing mold and other indoor air contaminants, information for university/departmental hurricane plans, creating a safe laboratory environment, club sports risk management and what to do when workplace injuries occur. A luncheon featuring President Cowen will take place at noon. To register for all or a portion of this event, visit: http://tulane.edu/oehs/risk-and-safety-summit-2013.cfm

Sincerely,
Supt. Jon Barnwell
