Dear friends,

In an effort to keep the Tulane community more informed about our efforts to keep our students, faculty and staff safe, I am launching WAVE PATROL, a regular newsletter about our security efforts. This monthly newsletter will be in addition to the regular crime alerts that you might also be receiving.

Upon my arrival at Tulane in January, we researched where most of our off-campus students live. We found that 90 percent live within one mile of our uptown campus. As a result we expanded our jurisdiction and hired additional officers to secure this area jointly with the New Orleans Police Department. The increase in jurisdiction means we will be reporting more incidents than a college police department that polices only their campus.

We have assigned a total of 20 officers to patrol our uptown campus and extended jurisdiction during evening and overnight hours. We also work hand in hand with approximately 30 on-duty NOPD officers whose jurisdiction includes this area, bringing the combined total to 50 officers potentially available in this one-mile area. Our officers all wear high visibility vests as they patrol on foot, bicycles and in marked units.

Our force is fully staffed and prepared. We are doing our utmost to deter those intent on perpetrating a crime. Our increased number of officers, plus the aggressive education and outreach we have done with our students and plan to do when they return in the fall, makes us confident we are employing best practices to protect our Tulane family.

Stay Informed
Sincerely,
Supt. Jon Barnwell
