Tulane University has been named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for 2012 by the Corporation for National and Community Service. This is the sixth consecutive year that Tulane has received the honor.
“This is recognition from the highest levels of the federal government of our commitment to service and civic engagement on our campus, " said Vincent Ilustre, executive director of the Center for Public Service at Tulane, which administers the university’s undergraduate public service requirement.
The President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, launched in 2006, annually highlights the role colleges and universities play in solving community problems and placing more students on a lifelong path of civic engagement.
“Through service, these institutions are creating the next generation of leaders by challenging students to tackle tough issues and create positive impacts in the community,” said Robert Velasco, acting CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service. “We applaud the Honor Roll schools, their faculty and students for their commitment to make service a priority in and out of the classroom.”
In addition to embedding public service in its undergraduate core curriculum, Tulane hosts a wide array of programs and activities in which students as well as faculty and staff can employ the knowledge and expertise of the university to address the urgent and long-term social challenges and opportunities of our region.
Tulane has been honored by many other organizations for its commitment to service. Newsweek ranked Tulane 19th among the country's 25 "most service-minded schools," and according to U.S. News and World Report, Tulane is in the top 24 for its service learning programs.
