Trumpeter Nicholas Payton, the 2011-2012 Jazz Artist-in-Residence at Tulane University, will perform with his trio featuring Vicente Archer on bass and Marcus Gilmore on drums on Thursday, Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. in Dixon Hall on Tulane’s uptown campus. The Tulane University Big Band, directed by Jesse McBride, will support the trio. The concert is free and open to the public.
“Nicholas Payton brings an encyclopedic-like knowledge to our students, and has asked them to listen close and work harder at understanding the communication within jazz,” said McBride, director of jazz combos for the Newcomb Department of Music. “His presence in our department has been the greatest direction-changing event I have seen since I have been working here.”
As Tulane’s Jazz Artist-in-Residence, Payton, a New Orleans native and Grammy-winning recording artist, holds master classes for high school and university students, giving them the unique opportunity to perform with and learn from a master craftsman of jazz.
This concert is the capstone performance of Payton’s first semester at Tulane; his virtuosity on multiple instruments will be displayed.
"Payton is the embodiment of New Orleans traditions even as he takes the music in new and exciting directions," said Larry Powell, Director of the New Orleans Center for the Gulf South.
Payton’s residency at Tulane is funded by Music Rising, the award-winning organization founded in 2005 after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Originally founded to provide aid to professional musicians of the region, Music Rising at Tulane supports the creation of a world class curriculum on the musical cultures of the Gulf South. Music Rising is administered by the Gibson Foundation. The concert is also supported by the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, a nonprofit jazz education organization.
