More than 1000 volunteers are expected to participate in a community service event on Sept. 15 held in Central City neighborhood of New Orleans.

Outreach Tulane, an annual community service event organized by the Community Action Council of Tulane University Students (CACTUS), will be held on Saturday, Sept, 15 from 8 a.m.- 4 p.m. Students will celebrate the event’s 22nd anniversary by supporting a committee of community organizations, activists and residents that live and work in Central City community. More than 1000 volunteers are expected to participate.

"In an effort to maximize the impact as well as build connections between students and the community, CACTUS has decided to focus service projects on the Central City community this year," said Tulane student and event organizer Michael Eisenstatt.

Participants will engage in a variety of service projects including deconstructing homes, distributing a Central City resource guide to over 3000 households, and beautification projects to reduce several areas of blight. Outreach Tulane partners include the Green Light Project, Jericho Road, United Saints, ReNEW Schools and several independent schools.

"We hope that our volunteers will stay involved with our community partners throughout the year," said Eisenstatt, who is CACTUS and Outreach Tulane event chair. "Jump-starting a lifetime of service by Tulane students is one of the goals of Outreach Tulane."

Following the day of service, volunteers, community partners and residents will celebrate at a party held on Tulane's uptown campus.

To participate, register online at http://outreach.tulane.edu/ or register in person on Sept. 15 at 8 a.m. in the Lavin-Bernick Center. Buses will transport Tulane volunteers to their service locations.
