Tulane University Faculty and Students Receive Fulbright Grants

Frank Ukadike, associate professor of film and African and African Diaspora studies at Tulane University, and Sanda Clejan, a professor in the Department of Pathology at Tulane, have been awarded Fulbright Scholar grants for the 2007-2008 academic year.

Clejan’s grant will fund her lectures on promotion, implementation and management of grants and technology transfer at Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest, Romania. Ukadike will study “Nollywood,” Nigeria’s booming, indigenous film industry at the University of Jos in Nigeria. 

Several Tulane students and recent graduates also received Fulbright funding for the 2007-2008 academic year. Sarah Dobra, a graduate student in Tulane’s School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, received a Fulbright research grant to study in Ecuador; Ian Mendenhall, a PhD student studying parasitology in Tulane’s School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, received a Fulbright grant to conduct research in Colombia; James Jeffers, a recent Tulane graduate, received a teaching assistantship in Russia and another recent graduate, Stefanos Roulakis, received a Fulbright grant to conduct research in Turkey.

Tulane will also host Fulbright recipient Ping Guo, a law professor at Dalian Maritime University in China, as he researches the American legal system of compensation for ocean pollution damage.

The Fulbright program, America’s flagship international educational exchange program, provides funding for U.S. citizens to study, teach or research in more than 150 countries worldwide. The Fulbright program also provides funds for scholars from other countries to study in the United Sates. Recipients are selected based on their academic or professional achievement and demonstrated leadership potential in their fields.
