UGS Corp., a leading global provider of product lifecycle management software and services, recently announced an in-kind software grant with a list price commercial value of $24 million to Tulane University. Tulane will receive UGS' Solid Edge and NX software, both 3D modeling tools. This software will be available to faculty and students in the biomedical engineering, math and physics departments.

One application of the software will be in the Biomedical Engineering Team Design projects, a program developed by Tulane professor Dave Rice, where students use 3D CAD modeling in the design and construction of devices to assist people in the community with various medical disabilities.

"We are very grateful to UGS for their investment in engineering and science at Tulane," said Nick Altiero, dean of the School of Science and Engineering. "This will provide our students and faculty access to remarkable state of the art software."

The in-kind grant includes contributions of the software and access to support and upgrade for one year. Extensive training materials are also made available. Annette Oertling, an instructor in the School of Science and Engineering, has led the effort to implement the software at Tulane.

"UGS is proud to build on its relationship with Tulane and the broader Louisiana community," said David Shirk, executive vice president of Global Marketing, UGS.

"Providing software to leading universities like Tulane empowers knowledge for twenty-first century engineers and helps in the critical effort to train a more skilled workforce in order to attract more business to the South - which will help rebuild and strengthen the region following last year's devastating storms. UGS is committed to Tulane's outstanding students and dedicated faculty."
