Rebecca Mark, a faculty member in the English department, has been appointed interim executive director of the newly established H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College Institute. Mark, a leader in women's studies, earned a Ph.D. in English and American Literature at Stanford.

"Professor Mark's commitment to students and excellence in scholarship will provide the Newcomb College Institute with strong leadership and a clear vision for the advancement of women's studies and women's programming that will follow in the traditions of Newcomb College," Tulane University Provost Lester Lefton said.

Mark will serve in this position until a permanent director is named following a national search. The H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College Institute was established in March 2006 on the recommendations of the Board of Tulane as a way to preserve the legacy and endowment of Newcomb College under the Renewal Plan. This sweeping plan, announced in December 2005, is a strategy to rebuild and renew Tulane University academically, physically and financially in a post-Katrina environment.

Under the Renewal Plan, all full-time undergraduates will enter the university through a single undergraduate college, rather than through a coordinate college system. A task force created by the Board of Tulane was charged with deciding how the names and endowments of Newcomb College and Tulane College would be used to support the new structure while also acknowledging those colleges' important historic ties to Tulane University.

Linda Wilson, a 1957 Newcomb alumna and Tulane board member who co-chaired the task force, said, "The institute is designed to be an academic center with the purpose of advancing women's education. It will have a clear focus and will draw women from different disciplines and schools." The Newcomb College Institute will be housed on the Newcomb campus.
