Three New Members Join Board of Tulane

Elizabeth S. Campbell, a securities broker, Richardson K. Powell, a real estate developer and property manager, and Richard K. Schmidt, a director with water and wastewater giant Kelda Group plc, have been elected to the Board of Tulane University. Campbell is a securities broker with Stephens, Inc, a full-service investment banking firm founded by her father, the late Wilton "Witt" Stephens in 1933.

Campbell received a B.A. from Randolph-Macon Woman's College and an M.B.A. from The University of Virginia before joining her family's firm in 1982. She has worked in many capacities within the firm, including corporate trading, corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions and estate and tax planning. She holds principal licenses in municipal bonds, financial advising and commodities and holds a Certified Financial Planning distinction.

Campbell has been involved in numerous charities and has served on the boards of local hospitals, churches and several school boards in Little Rock. Campbell's oldest child, Elizabeth "Bess" Chisum Campbell, is currently a senior in Newcomb College of Tulane University. Powell, who received his masters in architecture from Tulane in 1977, is a pioneer in historic preservation and urban redevelopment in Kansas City, MO.

He is best known for redeveloping, through his company Athena Corporation, a downtown section of Kansas City into a mixed-use office complex known as Baltimore Place. Powell's work has garnered several awards including the Economic Development Corporation Cornerstone Award; the City of Kansas City, MO-AIA/KC Urban Design Award; Building Owners and Managers Historic Building of the Year Award and the Jackson County Historic Society Preservation Award.

Powell served as the president of the Tulane Club of Kansas City from 1995 to 2002 and is a member of the Alumni Admissions Committee. He was an advisor on the Associates Board from 1996 to 2002 and served as Bequest Chair for Tulane's School of Architecture. He has also served on the Dean's Advisory Council since 1997. Over the last decade Powell has chaired numerous committees and held every office of the Tulane Alumni Association, including president.

He currently serves on Tulane's President's Council, which advises the Tulane president. Powell has also been active in the Boys and Girls Club of Kansas City, the Kansas City Museum/Science City and the Kansas City Neighborhood Alliance. He is currently active with the Kuehn Foundation, the Powell Family Foundation and Kansas City's Botanic Garden, where he is an advisor.

Schmidt, a native of New Orleans who previously served on the Board of Tulane as the Alumni Association representative, received his bachelor's degree in civil engineering in 1966 and a master's degree in environmental engineering from Tulane in 1967. He was also a three-year letterman for the Green Wave baseball team. Schmidt is a past president of the Tulane University Alumni Association and a current member of the Tulane Engineering Board of Advisors.

He has also served as co-chair of the New York Chapter of the Tulane Alumni Association and as a member of the T-Club Board of Directors. Schmidt began his professional career with Ecodyne Corporation in 1971 after earning his doctorate in environmental engineering from the University of Texas in 1970 and completing the program for Management Development at Harvard Business School.

Schmidt co-founded Gundle, the largest worldwide manufacturer and installer of synthetic membrane liners for environmental protection and was president and chief operating officer of Mechanical Technology, Inc, before joining Aquarion in 1992. From 1995 to September 2003 he served as president and CEO of Aquarion, one of the largest water and wastewater utilities in the United States.

Schmidt is currently a non-executive director of Bradford, England-based Kelda Group plc, one of the world's largest water and wastewater companies in the world and parent of Aquarion Company.
