Who: Tulane University President Scott Cowen
What: As president of Tulane University and chair of the Education Committee of the Bring New Orleans Back Commission, Cowen will urge members of the U.S. House of Representatives' Committee on Education and the Workforce to support funding for the recovery of universities and K-12 schools damaged by Hurricane Katrina. The hearing is entitled "Gulf Coast Recovery: Facing Challenges and Coming Back Stronger in Education."
When: April 26, 10 a.m. EDT in Room 2175 of the Rayburn House Office Building
Why: Universities damaged by Hurricane Katrina need passage of the Education Relief Loan Program, which would provide repayable loans to help hurricane-impacted universities manage the cash flow issues they face as they try to recover their losses from insurance carriers and FEMA. New Orleans elementary and secondary schools, 70 percent of which were damaged by Katrina, need to be repaired for returning students.
