The Tulane University Medical Alumni Association presented this year's Lifetime Achievement Award to oncologist Henry Clement Pitot III at the Golden Graduates Brunch sponsored by the medical school. Pitot is a professor emeritus of oncology, pathology and laboratory medicine at the McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Upon completion of his medical degree at Tulane in 1955, Pitot received a PhD in biochemistry at Tulane, while training in pathologic anatomy at the Charity Hospital of Louisiana. He received an Honorary Doctor of Science from Tulane University in 1995. He received an Honorary Doctor of Science from Tulane University in 1995. Pitot was director of the McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research from 1973 - 1991.

He served as chair of pathology at the University of Wisconsin Medical School and acting dean of the medical school of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. A member of the President's Cancer Panel from 1992 - 1995, Pitot was a member of the Commission on Life Sciences of the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences from 1993 - 1997.

He received the Parke-Davis Award for Meritorious Research in Experimental Pathology, the Distinguished Service Award of the American Cancer Society, and the Hilldale Award of the University of Wisconsin. He is an honorary member of the Japanese Cancer Association, as well as an honorary life member of the American Cancer Society. Recently Pitot received the Gold-Headed Cane Award of the American Society for Investigative Pathology.

Pitot has published over 400 research papers, review articles, book chapters and four editions of the text Fundamentals of Oncology. Pitot's research efforts may be applied to an understanding of both the prevention and the therapy of human cancers.
