Tulane University paid tribute to Sen. John Hainkel's long-standing commitment to Louisiana students by renaming a popular scholarship program in his honor at a special ceremony in Baton Rouge last night. The Louisiana Scholars Award, a merit-based scholarship awarded by Tulane to two outstanding entering Louisiana freshmen, will be renamed the John Hainkel Louisiana Scholars Program.

The awards made through the program will be known as the John Hainkel Louisiana Scholars Awards. The awards, which cover the full cost of tuition, fees, room, board and an $800 stipend for the cost of books and supplies, is renewable for four years (or five for architecture students) provided the student maintains a 3.00 cumulative grade point average and full-time enrollment in a full-time undergraduate division.

The renaming of the program was announced through a memorial resolution read by President Scott Cowen at a ceremony attended by Sen. Hainkel's family at the Shaw Center for the Arts in Baton Rogue. The ceremony was part of the annual Tulane University Day at the Legislature.

Hainkel, who passed away on April 15, earned undergraduate and law degrees from Tulane and was closely associated with the university for more than 40 years. An enthusiastic fan of Green Wave athletics, Hainkel served on the athletics department's Perpetual Wave Steering Committee and was a member of the baseball team's Grounds Krewe, which helps maintain the baseball field at Tulane's Turchin Stadium. He also served on the Tulane Health Sciences Center's Key to the Cure Committee and the university's Louisiana Council, a group of alumni who encourage Louisiana students to attend Tulane.

"This scholarship is being named in honor of John Hainkel's life and accomplishments, his long-standing commitment to ensuring that Louisiana students attend college in Louisiana and his lifelong devotion to Tulane University," Tulane University President Scott Cowen said.
